  • Why is a 1999.5-2002 Cabrio known as "3.5"?

The chassis is A3, but the look is designed to match mk4. Because it's not completely a mk3, and not completely mk4, many people refer to it as mk3.5. In Europe, it was known as the mk4 Cabrio.

  • What parts are specific to the mk3.5 Cabrio?

The fenders, bumpers, hood, trunklid, and radiator support are unique to the mk3.5 Cabrio.

  • What parts do the mk3.5 Cabrio and mk4 Golf share?

The mk3.5 Cabrio uses mk4 Golf headlights, side marker lights and bumper marker lights.

  • What about the steering wheel and shifter knob? Those are mk4 too, right?

No. The steering wheel and shifter knob are mk3-fitment parts modified to look like mk4 parts. 1 2

  • Can I use a mk4 Jetta bumper/headlights on my mk3.5 Cabrio?

No. As mentioned above, although the mk3.5 Cabrio bumper is designed to look like mk4, it is not. So to get a mk4 Jetta front end on a Cabrio, you'd have to custom-make a bumper, fenders, hood, headlight mounts, etc.

  • Are model year 1999 Cabrios mk3 or mk3.5?

1999 is a split model year for the Cabrios, so some model year 1999 Cabrios are mk3, and some are mk3.5. To differentiate, mk3.5 1999 Cabrios are commonly referred to as being model year "1999.5".[If someone has which productions months correspond to mk3/mk3.5 for M.Y. 1999, please post!]
